Ci siamo imbattuti in un articolo divulgativo in lingua inglese nel merito alle piste alternative all’erba e ci è sembrato corretto tradurlo e riproporlo anche agli appassionati italiani poiché tali superfici sono in crescita anche nel nostro paese e con l’apertura di Milano alla pista in sabbia potrà essere utile un po’ a tutti.

Le gare All Weather sono una parte importante della UK Fixture List. Sei piste utilizzano superfici All-Weather. Tuttavia, c’è una differenza enorme tra le diverse superfici dei circuiti!

In questo articolo, spiegheremo le differenze tra le tre diverse superfici: Polytrack, Tapeta, Fibresand.

Storia delle corse All Weather…

Le corse all-weather erano originariamente pensate per i cavalli saltatori, negli anni ’80 era invalso l’idea che saltare su superfici all-weather sarebbe stato meglio, ma la realtà dei fatti dimostrò il contrario. I cavalli saltatori, sul tal superficie continuavano a farsi male ed allora le corse ad ostacoli furono abbandonate lasciando il posto alle corse in piano.

All’inizio dell’avventura le corse sulla superficie “All Weather” aveva una pessima reputazione, proprietari e allenatori erano dell’idea che fossero solo per cavalli di scarsa qualità e ci sono voluti più di dieci anni per cambiare questa opinione. Anche molti scommettitori hanno ancora una visione negativa delle corse all-weather e non è bastata neanche l’invenzione degli “All-Weather Championships”.

Nel 2024, però possiamo sostenere che il trend è cambiato e vediamo cavalli di prima qualità correre nelle sei piste attuali.

Cos’è una superficie Polytrack?

Polytrack è la scelta più popolare di superfici per le piste poiché utilizzabili in tutte le condizioni atmosferiche nel Regno Unito. La maggior parte degli allenatori preferisce Polytrack a tutto il resto perché è la superficie più giusta su cui i cavalli possono gareggiare. È una superficie veloce, con pochi urti e praticamente nessun contraccolpo.

Caratteristiche principali di una superficie Polytrack:

Consistenza: Polytrack fornisce una superficie di gara stabile e coerente, riducendo la variabilità che può influenzare i risultati della gara.

Drenaggio: la superficie ha eccellenti proprietà di drenaggio, assicurando che le gare possano procedere anche dopo forti piogge.

Benessere del cavallo: simile a Tapeta, Polytrack è progettato per ridurre al minimo il rischio di lesioni, fornendo un atterraggio più morbido per gli zoccoli dei cavalli.

Tapeta è molto simile a Polytrack. Non c’è quasi nessun contraccolpo e dicono che è più versatile di Polytrack. È una superficie molto giusta su cui gareggiare e sarebbe abbastanza simile a Good su una pista in erba sintetica, il più simile possibile a tutte le condizioni atmosferiche!

Cos’è una superficie Tapeta Racing?

Tapeta è un tipo di superficie sintetica per piste da corsa realizzata con una miscela di sabbia, gomma e fibre rivestite di cera. L’ex allenatore Michael Dickinson ha sviluppato la superficie, Tapeta mira a fornire una superficie più sicura e più tollerante per i cavalli.

Caratteristiche principali di una superficie Tapeta:

Sicurezza: Tapeta è progettata per ridurre il rischio di lesioni ai cavalli fornendo una superficie uniforme e ammortizzata.

Manutenzione: questa superficie richiede meno acqua rispetto alle tradizionali piste in terra battuta, rendendola più ecologica.

Resistenza alle intemperie: Tapeta si comporta bene in varie condizioni meteorologiche, mantenendo la sua integrità sia in climi umidi che asciutti.

L’ippodromo di Wolverhampton e Newcastle hanno cambiato il suo percorso da Polytrack a Tapeta.

Cos’è una superficie da corsa in Fibresand?

Infine, abbiamo Fibresand a Southwell. È completamente diversa da Polytrack e Tapeta e Southwell è l’unica pista a utilizzarla. Fibresand è una superficie composta da sabbia silicea di alta qualità mescolata a fibre sintetiche.

Caratteristiche principali di una superficie in Fibresand:

Stabilità: Fibresand è una miscela di sabbia e fibre sintetiche. Le fibre aiutano a legare insieme la sabbia, fornendo una superficie più stabile.

Consistenza: l’aggiunta di fibre sintetiche aiuta a mantenere la consistenza della superficie della pista, riducendo la probabilità di un fondo irregolare che può causare lesioni ai cavalli.

Durata: la superficie è durevole e richiede meno manutenzione rispetto alle tradizionali piste in terra battuta. Può sopportare un uso intenso senza degradazione significativa.

È molto più lenta delle altre due superfici ed è molto più dura per i cavalli. Se Polytrack fosse simile a Good ground su erba, allora Fibresand sarebbe molto simile a Soft. Questo sarebbe il modo migliore per capire le differenze.

A differenza di Polytrack e Tapeta, Fibresand produce molto contraccolpo che alcuni cavalli odiano. Naturalmente, ci saranno cavalli che amano Southwell; ma la maggior parte dei cavalli preferirebbe correre sulle altre due superfici.

Polytrack vs Tapeta, qual è migliore?

Il dibattito è aperto; onestamente, ci sono alcune differenze tra le due superfici. Tapeta è forse più vicina al manto erboso naturale, mentre Polytrack ha un vantaggio quando si tratta di resistenza al calore. Nel complesso entrambi i tipi fanno un buon lavoro nel consentire ai cavalli di correre su una superficie adatta su cui è sicuro correre.

All Weather Racing History…

Did you know that all-weather racing was originally meant for the jumps!?

Back in the 1980’s they had the idea that jumping on all-weather surfaces would be better during the winter but as it turned out, it was terrible. Horses kept finishing lame, and jumps racing was cancelled, giving way to flat racing.

All Weather racing had a very poor reputation at the start. Owners and Trainers took the view that it was only for poor-quality horses. It took more than ten years to change that view.

It’s incredible when you think about where we are now with all-weather racing compared to at the start…

However, it would be fair to say that a lot of punters still take a dim view of all-weather racing. Even with the invention of the All-Weather Championships.

In 2024 we see top quality horses racing at the six tracks now.

What is a Polytrack surface?

Polytrack is the most popular choice of surfaces for all weather tracks in the UK. Most trainers prefer Polytrack over everything else because it is the fairest surface for horses to race on. It’s a fast surface, with little jar and basically no kickback.

Key Features of a Polytrack Surface:

Consistency – Polytrack provides a stable and consistent racing surface, reducing the variability that can affect race outcomes.

Drainage – The surface has excellent drainage properties, ensuring that races can proceed even after heavy rainfall.

Horse Welfare – Similar to Tapeta, Polytrack is designed to minimize the risk of injuries, providing a softer landing for horses’ hooves.

Tapeta is very similar to Polytrack. There’s almost no kickback and they say that it’s more versatile than Polytrack. It’s a very fair surface to race, and would be quite similar to Good on a turf track – as similar as all weather could be anyway!

What is a Tapeta Racing Surface?

Tapeta is a type of synthetic racetrack surface made from a mixture of sand, rubber, and fibres coated with wax. Former trainer Michael Dickinson developed the surface, Tapeta aims to provide a safer and more forgiving surface for horses.

Key Features of a Tapeta Surface:

Safety – Tapeta is designed to reduce the risk of injuries to horses by providing a consistent and cushioned surface.

Maintenance – This surface requires less water compared to traditional dirt tracks, making it more environmentally friendly.

A while ago Wolverhampton changed their course from Polytrack to Tapeta and now Newcastle has it too.

What is a Fibresand Racing Surface?

Lastly, we have Fibresand at Southwell. It’s completely different to Polytrack and Tapeta and Southwell is the only course to use it, however this later changed. Fibresand is a surface made up of high-quality silica sand mixed with synthetic fibres.

Key Features of a Fibresand Surface:

Stability – Fibresand is a mixture of sand and synthetic fibres. The fibres help to bind the sand together, providing a more stable surface.

Consistency – The addition of synthetic fibres helps to maintain consistency in the track’s surface, reducing the likelihood of uneven footing that can cause injuries to horses.

Durability – The surface is durable and requires less maintenance compared to traditional dirt tracks. It can withstand heavy usage without significant degradation.

It’s much slower than the other two surfaces, and it’s a lot harder work for the horses. If Polytrack was similar to Good ground on turf, then Fibresand would be very similar to Soft. That would be the best way to understand the differences.

Unlike Polytrack and Tapeta, Fibresand produces a lot of kickback which some horses hate. Of course, you will have horses who love Southwell; but the majority of horses would prefer to race on the two other surfaces.

There is a debate between some about which surface is better?

In honesty, there are a few differences between the two surfaces. Tapeta is perhaps closer to natural turf, whilst Polytrack has the edge when it comes to heat resistance. Overall both types do a good job at allowing horses to race on a suitable surface which is safe to run on.
